  • Excerpt: I like the Magellan Gin, and I suspect the majority of those who read my review will like it too. Tall cocktails with soda are definitely enhanced by its iris flavour; however, short cocktails like martinis and gimlets are perhaps overwhelmed by that same characteristic.

  • Excerpt: As for iris, I never did find out what they taste like. But one thing’s for sure, Magellan doesn’t taste anything like flowers.

  • Excerpt: Finishes cleanly, bittersweet and long. One of the more bitter and intensely bean-like gins I've sampled.

  • Excerpt: The blue color is distinctive and will surely get noticed at the bar; however, as a gin, it ultimately struggles to carve out a space. The heat, somewhat unbalanced spice-forward flavor profile and astringency causes Magellan Gin to come up a bit short in a crowded gin market.

Raided Score is a conversion from an external site's score, to our in house uniform scoring system. Please see the FAQ for more.

  • Intro:

Despite hosting what may be the most decrepit website on the net, Magellan gin brings some neat things to the table. First off, its blue. Second, it is made with 11 botanicals: cloves, Iris root and flower, juniper, cinnamon, cassia, orange peel, coriander, licorice, grains of paradise, cardamom and nutmeg. Also, I dont know if I mentioned this already, but its blue. Its imported from France, and its blue.

  • Nose:

Crazy floral, loaded with juniper. White pepper, honey, perfume.

  • Taste:

Medium mouth feel. No heat. Sweet honey, then a blast of floral character. Juniper presence is medium to high. Nice bouquet, but sort of one note in that its almost all flowery perfume notes.

  • Finish:

Short to medium length. Mild. Flowery, perfume-y, sweet.

  • Overall:

A fun dram, and the blue is neat, but its one noted and a floral overdrive. Delicious, but you shouldn't be reaching for this unless you want a crazy floral dram.
