On Thursday, Australian actress Margot Robbie unveiled her own spirit brand, Papa Salt Gin, made and owned in collaboration with friends Josey McNamara, Regan Riskas, Charlie Maas and her husband, Tom Ackerley.
Papa Salt is inspired by the Australian coast and made in Byron Bay. The gin was created as a passion project by Robbie and her friends who shared a love for gin. The team created 59 variations over five years, incorporating oyster shells, roasted wattleseed and pink peppercorn, among other native Australian botanicals.

According to the brand, the gin is a tribute to the laid-back Australian lifestyle and evokes memories of languid days spent on the beach. It was named after Papa Salt, a man from the Californian Coastline whom the group met while traveling and who embodied the Australian slang term for a beach bum: “salty sea dog.”
“Papa Salt is an easy-drinking gin that celebrates the subtle taste of native Australian botanicals,” the brand explained. “Flavours are brightened with zesty wax flower, hibiscus and citrus peel—all wrapped up with subtle hints of nutty wattleseed, the mild spice of pink peppercorn and an unmistakable minerality from a hint of oyster shell. Yes, there’s a lot to it, but in the end we hope you notice just how easy it is to drink.”
“Have it long or short, this gin was made for sessionable drinking — our go-to is a generous pour of Papa Salt, with soda, lots of ice and a wedge of fresh grapefruit.”

The brand shared that the best way to enjoy its gin is with soda water, as, according to Riskas, “It’s quite easy to hide a subpar gin behind the taste of tonic.”
“It was really important for us to tick all three of these boxes, as well as [create] something you don’t get sick of after one, because that’s not how our friends drink,” Riskas added, per Broadsheet.
43%-ABV Papa Salt Gin is now available to purchase online at iconicbeverages.com.au and select stockists, priced at $85.00 per 700ml bottle.
